Scholarship Application Materials

Western Classical Dance. Suggested Photographs – (1) demi plié in 1st position with arms in 2nd, (2) tendu devant éffacé (open position) with arms in 4th, (3) 1st arabesque en l’air de côté in profile (facing side) and (4) à la seconde en l’air en face, and (5) attitude éffacé or croise are required for all nominations; for girls only, also (6) en pointe 4th position croisé with arms in 5th. Girls should ideally wear a leotard, tights and ballet/point shoes; boys should ideally wear a fitted t-shirt or a-shirt, tights, and ballet shoes with socks. Applicants under 14 years of age may instead submit: (1) demi plié in 1st position with arms in 2nd, (2) tendu devant à terre efface, (3) tendu à la seconde à terre en face with arms in 2nd, and (4) 1st arabesque à terre de côté in profile (facing side). Additional photographs evidencing the applicant’s qualifications are encouraged. Video – barre work videotaped from both the front and side including: (1) demi and grand pliés, (2) tendus, (3) dégagés (battement jetés), (4) ronds de jambes, (5) grand battements, and (6) developés (extensions) en croix, as well as center work videotaped from the front including: (1) small and large jumps, (2) pirouettes, (3) adagios, (4) allegros, (5) an across-the-fl oor combination of at least eight measures which includes leaps and turns, (6) a modern or jazz combination, and (7) two solo dance presentations each lasting at least two minutes in contrasting styles (such as classical and modern dance variations). Applicants under 14 years of age may simplify these requirements to suit their level of training. Photos and video of stage performances also may be submitted.

Western Classical Drama Awards: Video – clips showing at least 15 total minutes of studio work or performances in at least two contrasting roles by authors from different countries AND different historical periods. At least one of the works performed should date from before the year 1900 and at least one should date from after the year 1900. Stage performances also may be submitted.
